Sailing Courses

Introduction to Sailing:  2 Hrs – $100

Prerequisites: None

Description: Experience the magic of sailing with this two-hour introductory course. Hoist the sails and cast off for an action-packed two hour sailing lesson! Learn the lingo, set the sails, and take the tiller. Feel what it’s like to be one with the wind and water. For those with lots of interest but little time – give sailing a try!  We know you’ll be back for more.

Keelboat 1 (ASA 101)  part A:  2 Days – $430

(Formerly Basic Keelboat Sailing)

Prerequisites: None

Description: Learn to Sail a 22′ sailboat in light winds and sea conditions in familiar waters under supervision. This course is designed for the novice who wishes to get a solid foundation and a level of confidence before advancing to the more intensive certification courses. Taught on our Catalina Capri 22 keelboats; covers rigging the boat, tacking, jibing, sailing all points of sail, nautical terminology and safety. This 2 day course is the first half of Keelboat 1 certification, or simply a fun weekend learning to sail!

Keelboat 1 (ASA 101) part B:  2 Days – $450

Prerequisites: ASA 101 Keelboat 1 (Part A, above) or equivalent course or experience

Description: The second half of Keelboat 1 (ASA 101) : Complete your progression to Keelboat Certification.  Learn to Skipper a 22′ sailboat in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. Taught on our Catalina Capri 22 keelboats; perfect for stability and responsiveness, as well as crew comfort. Build on the basic sailing skills developed in Learn to Sail and progress to docking, mooring, speed control, man-overboard recovery, auxiliary power and basic navigation.

Successful completion results in ASA 101 Keelboat 1 Certification, so you can Skipper daysailers with confidence.  Our graduates receive their first keelboat rental at the club rate of $130 (50% off the retail price), to put their new skills into practice.

NEW! Keelboat 2 NEW!: (ASA 102) 2 Days – $475

NEW TO THE ASA for 2024!

Prerequisites: Keelboat 1 certification (ASA 101) or significant sailing experience

Description: NEW to the ASA system.  Improve the skills learned in  Keelboat 1 with additional training to gain proficiency and better understand basic sailing maneuvers by studying & practicing boat and sail trim in greater detail.  Learn basic sail theory: angle of attack, sail depth, and twist.  Learn and practice how to use a traveler, sheets, vang, traveler, outhaul, cunningham, halyard tension, jib car movement, and backstay tension. Learn boat and helm balance and use of a tiller extension.

This course also allows students to gain some of the recommended sailing time (24 hours) before taking ASA 103.

More advanced sailors will find this course useful to improve their understanding and gain experience with sail trim.

(This course is NOT a prerequisite for 103, but a very helpful step.)

Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) 3 Days – $875

Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Sailing Certificate (ASA 101)

Description: Cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary powered sailboat in moderate winds and sea conditions. For students who already have some auxiliary power experience, this course is taught on the Beneteau 32. New skills include anchoring, mooring ball pickups, reefing, chart-reading, maneuvering under power with an inboard diesel, and confidently handling a larger sailboat under sail or power. Liveaboard option available for this course.

Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104) 3 Days – $1250

Prerequisites: ASA Basic Keelboat Sailing and Basic Coastal Cruising Certification

Description: This liveaboard course is the gateway to worldwide bare-boat chartering. A more advanced course for individuals with basic coastal cruising experience, you’ll act as skipper and crew of a 30 – 50 foot boat, sailing by day in coastal waters. This course covers boat systems, maintenance procedures, navigation, provisioning, weather and more advanced sailing skills – the tools you’ll need to charter a cruising boat, or skipper your own. Taught on cruising yachts 32-40′, provisions included.

Basic Coastal Cruising / Bareboat Cruising: (ASA 103/104) 5 Days – $1600

Prerequisites: ASA Basic Keelboat Certification

Description: Combines basic and intermediate coastal cruising/bareboat charter courses in a 5-day, liveaboard curriculum – a full-immersion experience!  By the end of the course, you’ll be able to act as skipper or crew of a 30-50′ cruising sailboat, in preparation for bareboat chartering or handling your own cruising boat. New skills include anchoring, mooring, reefing, chart-reading & navigation, manuevering under power, boat systems, maintenance procedures, provisioning, weather and more advanced sailing skills – the tools you’ll need to confidently handle a larger sailboat under sail or power. This liveaboard course (provisions included) is the gateway to worldwide bare-boat chartering, and is taught on cruising yachts 32-40′.

Coastal Navigation & Piloting: (ASA 105) 4 Days – $425

Prerequisites: None

Description: Demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. Practical application of this sailing knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal Cruising Standard.

Advanced Coastal Cruising: (ASA 106) 6-7 Day DELMARVA Circumnavigation – $1950

Prerequisites: ASA Basic Keelboat Sailing, Basic Coastal Cruising, Bareboat Cruising and Coastal Navigation Certification

Description: Safely act as skipper and crew of a sailing vessel about 30 to 50 feet in length. This is a day and nighttime Standard in coastal and inland waters, in any weather. This liveaboard course includes provisions and ASA text and certification materials.

Cruising Catamaran: (ASA 114) 2 Days – $1460 SUMMER SALE! $1200

Prerequisites: Keelboat 1 (ASA 101), Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103), and Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104). Approximately 80 hours of experience sailing at the 103 level is recommended.

Course Objectives: Be able to skipper an auxiliary powered sailing cruising catamaran, approximately 30-45’ in length, during a multi-day liveaboard cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions.

Course Conduct: This is a two-day course for students who already have their Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104) certification. Both days will be spent sailing in our local area, learning how to handle a Cruising Catamaran under Sail and Power. The boat will return to the dock at night. Students may stay overnight aboard the boat during the course. This course is taught aboard our 2023 Seawind 1260 Catamaran, SECOND SIGHT.

Combination Bareboat Cruising & Catamaran Endorsement (ASA 104 & 114) 4 day combination – $3000 SUMMER SALE $2500

Prerequisites: Keelboat 1 (ASA 101) and Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103). Approximately 80 hours of experience sailing at the 103 level is recommended.

Course Objectives: Be able to skipper an auxiliary powered sailing cruising catamaran or monohull, approximately 30-45’ in length, during a multi-day liveaboard cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions.

Course Conduct: This combination course completes both the Bareboat Cruising (ASA 104) and Catamaran Endorsement (ASA 114) certifications.  Students may stay aboard throughout the course.  The first two days are spent in the local area, returning to the dock each night.   On the third day, the class will depart on a two-day out & trip, returning to our Marina the night of the 4th day.   Students must complete the 104 standards before ASA 114 can be awarded.  This course is taught aboard our 2023 Seawind 1260 Catamaran, SECOND SIGHT.

Docking: (ASA 118 Endorsement) 1 Day – $425

Prerequisites: ASA 103 for certification, but anyone may take course for experience.

Description: This 1-day course builds on the basic docking skills introduced in ASA 103 and 104, developing techniques for handling single engine boats in tight quarters as well as methods of securing boats to docks in a variety of conditions. Maximum 2 students, yields plenty of practice for both.

Marine Weather: (ASA 119 Endorsement) 4 Days – $495

LIVE ONLINE CLASS

Description: Weather is the single biggest factor affecting ALL mariners. Take the mystery out of marine weather forecasts by learning the basic principles of marine weather and the range of available resources. Observe weather and sea state conditions, interpret traditional weather and ocean charts, and use the latest technological tools and apps. Learn to apply the information for local, coastal and offshore voyages, making your time on the water as safe and efficient as possible.

This 4-day course combines lectures, hands-on exercises and an offshore passage planning practical. Textbook, workbook and study materials provided. ASA 119 Certification is included upon successful completion. View course schedule
